If you've ever embarked on a mission to improve your health you’ve probably used the scale as a form of measurement. Having a way to measure progress is imperative, no matter what type of transformation you're looking to accomplish. It's important that our goals have specificity.
The scale is our most-turned to form of measurement, but it can be tricky and discouraging! Have you ever had one of those mornings where you're feeling really good about yourself, only to hop on the scale and see a number you weren't expecting? Did it totally ruin your day??
I've talked to so many women who allow the number on the scale to dictate how they feel about their progress, despite all of the other non-scale evidence showing improvement. It's easy to let the scale be the deciding factor on whether we are making progress or not, even when we know logically that it doesn't make sense.
Weight fluctuations on a day to day basis are totally normal! These fluctuations can be due to exercise, post-workout muscle inflammation, digestion, elimination, hormones, what time of day it is, water intake, the accuracy of your scale and so much more.
In full transparency, I do use the scale to mark progress with my clients, but it's not our only form of measurement! When you have a goal it is important that you are tracking your progress, but non-scale victories carry just as much weight. (haha, see what I did there?)
Here are a few other ways you can track your progress:
Body fat %
Confidence
How your clothing fits
Digestion
Fewer medications
Increased flexibility
Stronger hair, skin & nails
Inches lost
More energy
Thinking clearer
Sex drive
Sleep quality & duration
Cognitive function
Stamina & endurance
Strength
Brain fog
I beg of you, please don't use the scale as your only means of tracking progress. You are amazing, no matter what the scale says! And in a culture that believes low body weight someone represents health, remember that it is only a small piece of the puzzle.
